The newly remodeled C. Baldwin Hotel (formerly the Doubletree Houston) is a property reimagined in the image of one of the founding mothers of Houston, Charlotte Baldwin Allen. For this property, a uniquely Texas-blend of female empowerment and Southern irreverence informed the art curation by Kevin Barry Art Advisory, resulting in a boutique hotel with personality to spare.
Starting at the hotel’s reception area, a portrait of the hotel’s namesake folds guests into the spirit of the hotel from moment one. This piece is an original work by English artist Mark Powell commissioned especially for the C. Baldwin Hotel. A highly-detailed ink illustration printed over a reproduction of an antique map of the Houston area, this portrait pays homage to a woman who fearlessly shaped Houston society. Keeping in the theme of great women, a large scale custom vinyl wall decal reminds guests that “Well Behaved Women Seldom Make History”, a quote that might inspire some fun antics by hotel guests during their stay.
When they’re not making history— or maybe while they’re doing it— Texas ladies roll up their sleeves and get to work. A custom large-scale canvas piece by local artist Reagan Corbett shows visitors to the C. Baldwin how it’s done. Her painting entitled “Lady Work” depicts just that, with the subject wearing a chic pair of sunny-hued heels while she gets the job done. More fresh Southern spirit can be found in a nearby sculptural moment of a bucking horse’s rear, cheeky photographs, and a graphic wall vinyl that reads “Fixin’ to Have a Good Time!”
Good times, local pride, and sisters doin’ it for themselves are the promise of C. Baldwin and in working with KBAA’s hospitality art advisors, they have an art collection that tells their story with charm and sass.
