At KBAA, we not only work with clients around the world, but we also have art advisors that live in so many wonderful cities. In honor of our team gearing up for the HCD Expo this October, we wanted to gather our local recommendations for those looking for a quintessential Kansas City experience.
Where to Stay
Hotel Kansas City
Originally built as a private club in the 1920s, this storied downtown building now houses one of Kansas City’s most iconic hotels. Part of the The Unbound Collection by Hyatt (a global portfolio of independent, premium hotels that offer unique and story-worthy experiences) you’ll get to experience the heart of downtown KC. As an added bonus, peruse the art in the guestrooms to see our programming, designed to echo the hotel’s rich architectural heritage and sense of timeless charm.

Crossroads Hotel
A standout in the heart of Kansas City’s arts district, this boutique hotel occupies a former Pabst Blue Ribbon bottling and distribution plant. It’s quintessential KC, with industrial-meets-modern design. Whether you’re staying here or not, be sure to grab a drink on the incredible rooftop bar that offers unbeatable skyline views.
Must-See Museums
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
This museum is a Kansas City landmark! Upon your arrival, you’ll be greeted by Shuttlecocks, a beloved art piece conceived by artists Claes Oldenburg and Coojse van Bruggen. Scattered across the museum’s lawn, four enormous badminton shuttlecocks hint at a whimsical match between giants who used the museum as their net. Upon entering beyond its neoclassical façade, the Nelson-Atkins boasts an impressive collection ranging from classical European works to modern American art.
Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art
The Kemper Museum is truly a contemporary favorite. With rotating exhibitions and a striking modern design, Kemper is an energizing stop for anyone who wants to get a feel for the current art conversation. Always free, thanks to the generosity of members and donors, you can pop in even for a short visit.

The Museum of Toys and Miniatures
For something unique, check out The Museum of Toys and Miniatures. It’s home to the world’s largest collection of fine-scale miniatures and one of the largest collections of historic toys currently on public display. Created by masterful craftsmen, you can check out the tiny study of Louis XV at the Palace at Versailles, an Italian Renaissance studio, or a Boston Beacon Hill mansion, all without leaving Kansas City.
Cozy Cafés
Messenger Coffee Co.
Our top pick for a coffee meeting or a solo morning with a sketchbook. Messenger roasts their beans in-house and serves them up in a spacious, three-story café with an incredible rooftop patio.

Café Corazón
This Latin-owned gem brings Argentine-style coffee to KC, along with vibrant, flavorful pastries. It’s a warm, culturally rich space we love to return to again and again.
Casual Eats
Joe’s Kansas City Barbeque
Housed in a converted gas station, Joe’s is a KC legend. Don’t just take our word for it, Anthony Bourdain named it his favorite BBQ in the world! Order the brisket or the Z-Man Sandwich and thank us later.
The Russell
A cozy, wood-fired café with a standout Steak Chimi sandwich. It’s fast-casual done right, with seasonal flair and a local-first approach.

Kata Nori
If you’re looking for some sushi, the best handrolls in the city are at Kata Nori. Headed up by Chef Anh Pham, he leads a team of experts that you can watch prepare your order as you sit at the intimate U-shaped counter in this lovely restaurant space.
Elevated Dining
The Town Company
Tucked inside Hotel Kansas City, The Town Company merges rustic elegance with culinary creativity. The open hearth kitchen sets the tone for a refined yet inviting dining experience.
Farina
For the very best Italian in the city, head to Farina. It’s ideal for client dinners or a celebratory night out, thanks to housemade pasta and a perfectly curated wine list.
The Antler Room
One of KC’s most acclaimed restaurants, The Antler Room offers a constantly evolving menu that’s both inventive and deeply satisfying. With an intimate setting and beautifully plated dishes, it’s a must for anyone who loves thoughtful, global cuisine.

Green Dirt on Oak
A dream destination for cheese lovers, this charming farm-to-table restaurant highlights award-winning cheeses sourced directly from their own goat farm. Expect seasonal dishes, elevated comfort food, and a welcoming atmosphere that feels distinctly Kansas City.
Nature & Wellness
Loose Park
A peaceful walk through Loose Park offers rose gardens, shaded paths, and sweeping views. It’s truly a stunning respite in a historic neighborhood. Get ready to look up every house on Zillow and picture your new life.
Kauffman Memorial Garden
Steps from the Nelson-Atkins, this hidden oasis is perfect for quiet reflection surrounded by lush landscaping and fountains.

Berkley Riverfront
Great for a morning jog or a Sunday visit to the local art walk. It’s a newer development with a creative spirit taking root!
Kla Spa
Tucked inside a former West Bottoms factory, Kla is a new spa offering thermal bath experiences in a design-forward setting. Come on, you deserve some pampering.
Hidden Gems
Jazz Bars
Kansas City’s jazz roots run deep, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Green Lady Lounge or The Black Dolphin. Both of these cozy, dimly lit venues serve up smooth sounds nightly. They’re favorites among our team for a relaxed evening out.
Boulevard Brewing Company
This beloved local brewery offers more than great beer. It’s also a fun spot for groups, with shuffleboard lanes, tasting flights, and seasonal small-batch releases that feel like creative experiments in a glass.
Kansas City has so much to explore, so we hope our curated list helped you narrow down the must-sees for your trip. We can’t wait to connect with those who will be at the HCD Expo. Follow us on instagram @kevinbarryartadvisory and tag us if you take photos at any of our recommendations!
