Art That Shines with Luminous Layers

 

In art, reflective materials invite interaction, shifting with your perspective to create ever-changing experiences. Layer these moments into your space to build depth and encourage pause. Find inspiration from nature in water or natural light, and bring it into artful moments that shine bright.

It’s so lovely to see the different materiality artists select to achieve these reflective effects. One artist may use glass from an upcycled mirror. Another may sprinkle mica powder into a resin topcoat for extra luminosity. In the bottom right, you can see how artist Adam Colangelo creates stunning works by adding patina to copper. On his website, he shares how you can experiment with the process at home using methods involving ammonia or salt, and vinegar. He even suggests something as simple as burying a piece of copper in your backyard and seeing what nature creates.

Turn heads with striking fashion moments. Lean into high-fashion expression with sculptural headpieces and luminous fabrics, or keep it understated with subtle, light-catching accents that quietly elevate the look.

From the Oscars earlier this year to the most recent Met gala, everyone is choosing fabrics that sparkle and shine. Rabanne Fall 2026’s Ready-to-Wear Show (close of up a piece in the center below) highlights that “fashion is a living art – one filled with real, living characters.”

Bringing in reflective forms is almost effortless in interior design. There are so many ways to include them. A glossy marble bar. Glassware that catches and casts light. Mirrors and lighting that amplify a room’s natural brightness. Silver, gold, crystal, metal, glass. The possibilities are endless.
