Healthcare environments are often encountered during meaningful moments in our lives. Whether seeking care for ourselves or someone we love, these spaces can carry heightened emotion, even alongside exceptional medical teams. At KBAA, we think deeply about how art advising carries through from brand to story to lived experience, often guided by a data-driven approach rooted in evidence-based design (including EDAC principles<\/a>). Here, we explore the artist process behind our work at the new Keck Medicine of USC Pasadena location, where our team was invited to help shape an environment designed to foster warmth, calm, and quiet reassurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pamela Harmon\u2019s Rhythmic Abstraction<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Pamela Harmon is based in Pasadena and is known for abstract works that explore rhythm, structure, and the unseen patterns found in nature. Her pieces \u201cLady Luck\u201d and \u201cPalooza\u201d are some favorites from our curation, supporting moments of reflection and visual ease throughout the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cArt and design have huge impacts in healthcare settings. What you see when you enter a space has the ability to affect the emotional edge created by urgency and the unknown. Sculptural Sensibility with Natalya Sevastyanova<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Natalya Sevastyanova is a Los Angeles\u2013based ceramic artist known for sculptural works that balance tactile warmth with quiet architectural form. Her piece, \u201cRipple\u201d draws inspiration from natural movement, using the expanding rhythm of water to explore the tension between structure and fluidity through porcelain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cArt plays an important role in healthcare and healing environments because it has the ability to slow people down, offer a sense of calm, and create a moment of visual relief within spaces that are often associated with stress or uncertainty. Roger Dolin\u2019s Expressive Approach<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Known for his expressive, nature-driven works that blur the line between landscape and abstraction, Roger Dolin is a Pasadena-based artist. His large piece \u201cPasadena Outlook” is displayed at street-level, facing outward behind glass windows to begin the sense of calm as you enter the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cArtwork is very important in a healing environment. We need to be reminded of our humanity and art is one aspect of being human that brings beauty to the world. We all need art, but it is essential in healthcare. Patients, staff, visitors alike appreciate the additional ‘human’ touch to what can be stressful environments. Artwork can sooth people in waiting rooms, stimulate people in dining rooms and lobbies. Stefanie Bauer is a Santa Monica\u2013based artist known for richly layered works that explore color, texture, and materiality. Her piece \u201cSeen Through a Porthole\u201d uses acrylic on handmade paper and wood to balance intuitive color, pattern, and softness through a layered, process-driven approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cArt shapes environments that carry us beyond ourselves, inviting quiet moments of reflection felt through all of the senses, not just the mind.
